Maintaining the school uniform is always a task as kids perform different activities during school hours resulting in dirt and stains.




Here are some essentials tips to maintain your school uniforms to keep them shine throughout the academic year.


Know your fabric

Uniform suppliers use a variety of textures to construct a uniform. Some common textures are shirting, suiting, hosiery fabrics using different yarns in cotton, polyester, viscose, or a mix of different yarns to suit the climate condition. Understanding the fabric type is the first step towards maintenance.


Garment care label

Read and follow the instructions carefully on the care label. Uniform manufacturers suggest wash and care instructions to best suit the garment.


Prepare uniforms for wash

You should open all buttons or hooks and ensure that the collar and cuffs are flattened and straight. Close all zips and Velcro before washing.


Use first wash to fix the colour

The first wash of the garment is always essential. Fabrics tend to lose their color and shine in the first wash itself. Soak your garment in color fix it with detergents for 15-20 mins and rinse with cold water, later dry in shade.


Wash dark color garment separately

If you want to keep your whites look white for a long time then wash them separately. Also if you segregate your light and dark colour garments while washing will help.


Hand wash or Machine wash

However, today parents in their busy schedules normally prefer machine wash for convenience and time-saving benefits. Set your machine wash timing accordingly to suit your garment type. You don’t have to wash the uniforms for long durations on a regular basis.


Use mild detergents

Use detergents that are not harsh on fabrics. Consistent use of harsh detergents will have an adverse effect on the garment.


Dry cleaning

Blazers, sweatshirts, jackets, sweaters should always be dry cleaned. Some parents dry clean other uniforms as well especially white shirts and trousers. Frequent dry cleaning is not recommended as cleaners use petrol guns, white petrol to clean your garments.


Drying

Avoid drying uniforms in a machine dryer if possible. It is recommended to dry them inside out in shade. This will avoid shrinkage and increase the life of the garment.


Ironing

Do not iron your uniform at high temperatures, they are responsible for pilling, shrinkage, and colour loss. In case of any prints on the garments then keep a piece of cotton cloth before ironing on the prints.
